Gary Kaake, Psy.D. and Bonnie Griffin Kaake (pronounced “cake”) are passionate about mental and physical health and cooking. Up until January 2012, they had been consuming what they believed was a healthy diet consisting primarily of chicken, fish, fruits, vegetables and grains. They rarely visited fast food restaurants or ate highly sweet or heavily processed food.
In fall of 2011, Bonnie was on 8 prescription medications and an annual physical’s test results showed she had just tipped into the obese BMI and was prediabetic as well. She has a family history of both diabetes and heart disease. Her maternal grandfather and many uncles died of massive heart attacks in their early to mid-fifties. Her paternal grandmother and her grandmother’s brothers all died from complications associated with diabetes. For many years Bonnie had struggled with episodes of hypoglycemia. Dr. Kaake had high cholesterol although his weight has been in the healthy range his entire life. You know the type, those that can eat anything but never gain a pound. They both sincerely believed the health issues were the result of increasing age and inevitable. Then, things changed!
Mid-January of 2012, during dinner, they watched a documentary “Forks Over Knives”. Ironically, they were eating a fillet mignon which they had not eaten for probably six-months or more. Following the movie they made a commitment to immediately change their diet to totally plant-based vegan. Within three months Dr. Kaake’s cholesterol was on the low side of normal. At only 5’1″, Bonnie had lost 25 pounds and was off seven of the eight prescription medications with her medical doctor’s approval and astonishment. Bonnie’s prescriptions included those for high cholesterol, acid reflux, high blood pressure, and more. She was no longer prediabetic, was no longer having hypoglycemic or acid reflux attacks or in the obese BMI.
Currently, feeling better than she has in ten years, Bonnie has a renewed interest in exercise as well. She continues to lose weight. Only 10-15 pounds more and she will likely be able to stop the one blood pressure prescription that she has been taking for well over 30 years. She is currently healthier than her nine brothers and sisters, eight of which are younger.
Bonnie has had a long career in marketing and marketing management, both with the General Electric Company and as owner of Innovative Consulting Group, Inc. an innovative product marketing agency for the last 18 years. She is a nationally published author and frequent guest speaker. Her passion for the Whole-Foods, Plant-Based Lifestyle has propelled her in this new direction. She has a Certification in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell/T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and is a Master Gardener. She reads voraciously on the topic of Whole-Foods, Plant-Based Nutrition and has an overflowing bookshelf in the kitchen with cookbooks and an ever expanding section for those with information and recipes for healthy Plant-Based dishes and healthy veganism.
The Kaakes enjoy organic fruit and vegetable gardening and cooking. The meals they prepare for others are met with rave reviews and requests for recipes from vegans and non-vegans alike. They have three cats and a dog and have recently installed solar panels on their home. Both Dr. Gary and Bonnie Kaake blog and use social media extensively to encourage others to make healthy changes in their lives and in the world we all live in. They enjoy eating at vegan restaurants and are quick to review those restaurants on social media.
