Is there anything more delightful and welcoming than the smell of fresh bread? Reminds me of the warm intoxicating smell when visiting my grandmother. There was rarely a day that she didn’t make it for her 11 children and later for her 44 grandchildren. Although my grandmother and yours didn’t know the dangers of oil and animal products in our food supply, we do. You too can make this healthy version that is oil and dairy free as well as vegan in minutes. Once you try this recipe, I am convinced you will be enjoying making your own homemade bread on a regular basis. Your taste buds will thank you. This is our favorite recipe and we save money and our health by making this on a weekly basis in our home. Just think about how much you spend on a monthly basis for inferior and less nutritious product in the grocery store.

I particularly enjoy this basic whole wheat seed bread for lunch with plenty of hummus and fresh tomato slices from our garden…a complete meal in itself.

Basic Seed Bread
(no oil, dairy or animal products)
- 1 1/4 Cups water
- 3 Cups flour (whole wheat, oat, rye or gluten free)
- 1 1/2 Tbs. dry soy milk
- 1 1/2 Tbs. maple syrup, honey, or sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbs. wheat gluten (optional)
- 2 tsp. bread machine yeast
- 1/2 Cup seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, hemp, etc.)
Place all ingredients in the order listed or as recommended by your bread maker. Makes one 1 1/2 pound loaf/12 slices. This recipe can be used on a Quick Cycle, Regular Cycle or Timer Delayed. For high altitude bread making, the Quick Cycle is recommended. Refrigerate finished bread for best results and use within 7-10 days.
